HOW DID YOU BECOME WHO YOU ARE?

How Did You Become Who You Are?

There is an old adage that states that the apple does not fall far from the tree. I usually hear that about an individual who acts like one of their parents; a parent that struggles with addiction, a father who is a  womanizer, or one who was raised in a family of con artists or grifters. Most of us have learned about these behaviors in Psychology 101, describing personality traits and human behavior that is dependent on nature or nurture.

The nurture perspective states that you are a product of your environment and there is nothing you can do about it. The nature theory posits that your behavior is predetermined because it is hereditary, or it is in your genes so to speak.

Children don’t have choices, but adults do. I am not dismissing the fact that genetics and culture influence how we live and the decisions we make.  Life happens, but ultimately, we all have a choice about how we want to live our lives.

Looking back on how you grew up, you may decide not to do the same things your parents did and sometimes you will choose to do the complete opposite. It may be difficult to break old patterns of behavior, but my point is that it is possible, and it is your choice. Don’t do things just because mama did it, papa did it, Bubba did it, and even Suzy Q. I strongly advise you not to go to extremes but to find a place in the middle.
